Travel Tips for North Carolina

There are some great places here.  I’ve eaten at the Big Oak, which is famous for its shrimp burgers and scallop burgers,  and at Lexington Barbecue, which many consider the standard for Western North Carolina barbecue – and will eat at both again.   And I hear great things about B’s and Brooks’. http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/north-carolina/hidden-restaurants-nc/ Continue reading Travel Tips for North Carolina

DCity Smokehouse

DCity Smokehouse has the best barbecue in the District of Columbia, although that may be damning with faint praise.  I will go back, despite some drawbacks. First, it suffers from its location – a storefront at the corner of Florida Avenue and North Capitol Street.  The left half is devoted to food preparation, and the right half is for the many people standing in line, … Continue reading DCity Smokehouse

A Bucket-List Barbecue Joint Goes Up in Flames

June 11, 2015: Lower the flags. I was planning on going there in February. http://gardenandgun.com/…/bucket-list-barbecue-joint-goes-f…. A Bucket-List Barbecue Joint Goes Up in Flames Last week, pit master Bryan Furman of B’s Cracklin’ Barbeque in Savannah, Georgia, served crowds larger and hungrier than any he had ever seen before. Miss Alabama Contestants in a Rib Eating Contest

June 3, 2015: Alabama tends to incorporate barbecue in all events — sensibly. I dont believe the rib contest counts to the final Miss Alabama selection. Of course, they could take a cue from the Miss Navajo Nation contest, which includes scoring for butchering a sheep, and score on the contestants’ ability to butcher a hog, build a pit, or at least try their skill … Continue reading Miss Alabama Contestants in a Rib Eating Contest

Green River BBQ, Saluda, North Carolina

May 24, 2015: If you’re traveling on I-25 from Charlotte to Asheville, you may want to stop in Saluda at the Green River BBQ. Eric Lee, who knows his barbecue, reports that “Pulled pork on garlic toast was really good. Slaw on the side and collards were excellent. Sauces were very good too (squeeze your own).”  Janet Katz:    Saluda! We used to go white … Continue reading Green River BBQ, Saluda, North Carolina

My Top Barbecue Places

May 22, 2015: David Boyd has asked for my top 5 barbecue places. Fair enough, although I don’t think you can really compare different styles of barbecue — Texas vs, North Carolina, for example. They are as different as, well, beef and pork. And, my life’s work being far from completed, I haven’t been to a lot of very highly rated places. I haven’t been … Continue reading My Top Barbecue Places

Ranking The Best Barbecue Joints in the DC Area

May 22, 2015: Mike Boyd came across this in the Washington Post. My experience with DC barbecue has not been good — and the photograph with the article looks like really dry brisket — but I need to try DCity Smokehouse. I had a bad experience with Hill Country, but then went to a Texas group event there and it was really good. And maybe … Continue reading Ranking The Best Barbecue Joints in the DC Area
