Gov. Bentley is on a roll. He removed the Confederate battle flag from the state grounds (I think it was over by the first White House of the Confederacy museum) and he now has announced the first inductees into the Alabama Barbecue Hall of Fame.
The sole criterion is having been in business continuously for 50 years. Given the high standards of Alabama barbecue, that’s a pretty reliable indicator of good if not necessarily great quality. Of course, that means it leaves out icons like Ollie’s, of blessed memory, and newcomers like Saw’s, but it’s certainly a helpful guide for anyone traveling around the state. I’ve only been to 11 of the inductees that I can recall, and I’ve posted about several.
