Nancy and a group of friends travel to one of our National Parks every year, and this year they chose the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They stayed on the North Carolina side in a cabin near Bryson City. Hiking and observing the wonders of nature naturally created an appetite for barbecue, and they visited two spots during their trip.
The first was Big Wesser Barbecue and Brew, which is situated in the Nantahala Outdoor Center along Wesser Creek. Being in an Outdoor Center, Big Wesser is not a conventional barbecue place – you can get a black bean and hummus wrap, and the slaw contains things like kale and brussels sprouts. They all chose the barbecue boat – shredded pork covered with a lot of slaw. They enjoyed both the barbecue and the slaw. The barbecue had a light smoky taste and was not dried out. In short it was pretty good but not great barbecue. The location – on a deck overlooking the creek – just what you would want.
They did not report on the beer, alas.
