I almost didn’t go to Moe’s while we were in Vail. Everyone was pretty barbecued out. I did have some time before meeting the others before lunch, so I stopped in and had a pork sandwich. I was surprised how good it was. Moe’s uses a box and cherry wood. The pork is moist and has some smoke taste, but what really helped was the barbecue sauce and the dill pickle chips. I was surprised how much difference they made. It probably helped that the chef, seeing my cap, gave me a Roll Tide, and it was nice that one of the staff was a new arrival from Cullman. It recalled the taste of Moe’s in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, and benefited from the memory. And perhaps it benefited from the knowledge that I was about to leave for Boston for my voting rights case agains the city, so I was bidding farewell to barbecue for a while. It was a nice send-off. Definitely stop in if you go to Vail.
