Wilber’s to Re-Open?

BREAKING NEWS:  Wilber’s May Re-Open

As all the world knows, Wilber’s, a giant of Eastern North Carolina Barbecue, was closed back on or about the Ides of March.  There seems to have been a little matter of unpaid taxes.

Wilber’s had great barbecue.

They also excelled in hush puppies (these are the remnants of an order)

and had very good slaw, green beans, and banana pudding.

This great institution had to file for bankruptcy, but Mr. Shirley — Mr. Wilber Shirley — promised to re-open, causing hearts to soar across the state and Nation.

Now, WRAL reports that “an investment group known as Goldpit Partners, LLC, has stepped forward to purchase the assets of the bankrupt restaurant, which is located at 4172 U.S. Highway 70 in Goldsboro, for $350,000.”   The plan now must be approved by a Bankruptcy Court judge, and, lawyers necessarily being involved, there’s a lot of complicated business that has to be considered.  I won’t bore you with the details because I never want to bore you or anyone else, and also because I know absolutely nothing about bankruptcy law.

Let’s hope that the Bankruptcy Court Judge is a fan of Eastern North Carolina barbecue, and that the application is approved quickly.

  1. That is great news however…our family tradition going back to the 1970’s was to stop at Wilber’s on the way to Emerald Isle for lunch.
Our trip this year is the last week of August. Where do you recommend for BBQ in the same area? King’s? McCall’s? We’ll have 6 adults and 6 kids.

    1. Good question. The only place close to Goldsboro I’ve tried and enjoyed is Grady’s (search “Grady’s” on the blog), which is very good, but a detour south. Adam’s Roadside is in the campaign for Real bbq NC list as a possible all wood cooking place. I haven’t tried McCalls. We come from the north and usually stop at Parker’s first. I hear Marty’s in Wilson also is good, but haven’t tried it. I’ll ask around some.
