Havana Cabana, Key West, Florida

Nancy and I spent a day at Havana Cabana last year with our neighbors, Scott, Julie, AJ, Hudson, and their posse — they of the Great Hammons-Cole-Guy September Barbecue. (See here.) You have a posse, don’t you? Anyway, much as Nancy and I loved the Barbary Beach House where we stayed that trip –and we really loved it — we decided to stay at the … Continue reading Havana Cabana, Key West, Florida

Why I’m a Fan of Waffle House

UPDATE:  Here’s yet another reason I love Waffle House  They stepped up the day after a tornado hit Futondale, Alabama. The local Waffle House set up a kitchen outside their restaurant and started feeding rescue workers and “an entire neighborhood.”   See this.  Good people. That sort of response is in Waffle House’s DNA.  It’s a shame more of us don’t have more of that DNA.   … Continue reading Why I’m a Fan of Waffle House

Sam Jones BBQ has Opened in Raleigh

This is the biggest news of the year! Okay, maybe not the biggest, depending on your priorities, but really big. And thanks to Dan Kenney, he of the excellent Coach4aday blog and the even more excellent Annual Beer Snob Pig Picking, for alerting me to this short piece from a Raleigh station. Raleigh has been waiting for some time for a much-ballyhooed wave of new … Continue reading Sam Jones BBQ has Opened in Raleigh

Pelican Bend Restaurant and Marina, Isles of Capri, Florida

Scott and Nora left, alas, and Nancy and I wandered lonely as a cloud* over to the Isles of Capri, the next island(s) north of Marco Island, for our last lunch of our Marco trip. We wound up at Pelican Bend. It’s a nice, casual place by the water, just what you want in Florida. There’s a large screened open area overlooking the marina with … Continue reading Pelican Bend Restaurant and Marina, Isles of Capri, Florida

Mama Lucia’s, Washington, DC

Folks here in Chevy Chase, DC, are thrilled! After 11 months of pandemic Groundhog Days there’s a new dining option in the neighborhood. It’s Mama Lucia’s, a carryout expansion of a Maryland suburban chain featuring pizzas, sandwiches, and red sauce Italian food. Red sauce Italian food is especially welcome now. It’s tasty, comforting, and — this is especially important for carryout — it travels beautifully. … Continue reading Mama Lucia’s, Washington, DC

The Oyster Society, Marco Island, Florida

Sing, O Goddess, the wrath of the Dolphin Tiki that brought countless ills upon Scott Griffin. Homer Our Guy Spa Day wreaked wroth upon the participants, and great was the carnage. It left Scott, who had ordered fries rather than beans and rice and eaten perhaps more of the delicious onion strings than necessary, hors de combat when time came to have dinner (on Scott … Continue reading The Oyster Society, Marco Island, Florida

Dolphin Tiki Bar and Grill, Marco Isand, Florida

Regular readers know by now that while Nancy and I were in Marco Island, pretty newlyweds cousin Scott Griffin and Nora Raynor came to stay with us for a few days. Nancy and Nora scheduled a spa day at the JW Marriott a few blocks down the beach from the Marriott Crystal Shores, where we all were staying. Scott and I, not to be outdone, … Continue reading Dolphin Tiki Bar and Grill, Marco Isand, Florida

Deep Lagoon Seafood and Oyster House, Marco Island, Florida: an Update

Nancy and I were joined in Marco by my cousin Scott Griffin and his lovely bride, Nora Raynor. Before they arrived, Nancy and I made reservations to go back to Deep Lagoon (see here for our first visit) on their second night in Marco (night one was the Snook Inn and the bottomless tuna poke) because (a) we really liked it , and (b) they … Continue reading Deep Lagoon Seafood and Oyster House, Marco Island, Florida: an Update

Havana Cafe of the Everglades, Chokoloskee, Florida

Our merry band, Nora and Scott Griffin and Nancy and I, drove down to Everglades City, ostensibly for a boat ride through the 10,000 Island area of Everglades National Park, but equally for lunch at the Havana Cafe of the Everglades. Not to spoil the ending, but they have great food in a beautiful setting. Now for some sex. The National Park boat tour takes … Continue reading Havana Cafe of the Everglades, Chokoloskee, Florida

The Snook Inn (2), Marco Island, Florida

We were joined in Marco by my cousin, Scott Griffin, and his new bride, Nora Raynor Griffin — who I guess is now a cousin. You’ve met them here and here. They arrived in the afternoon, and we all headed to the Snook Inn for dinner. Nancy and I’d had lunch there a couple of days before. Details here (great grouper sandwiches and smoked fish … Continue reading The Snook Inn (2), Marco Island, Florida
