The Texas Monthly Top 50 List is Out: Big Changes!

Daniel Vaughn’s quinquennial list of the Top 50 Barbecue Places in Texas is now out, and there are dramatic changes. You can see the list here.

The Top 50 list has been one of the if not the most reliable “Best” lists around. I relied heavily on it when I spent a term teaching at Baylor Law School, a position that left me plenty of time to tour Texas and try barbecue places. My confidence in the list is a bit shaken by seeing that perennial #1 Snow’s, the atelier of James Beard Foundation honoree Tootsie Tomanetz, has fallen to #7 but, having been away from Texas for a while, who am I to judge? A lot of familiar names have fallen off the list altogether. I really need to get to Texas. Maybe I should reach out to Baylor again.

  1. I am deeply suspicious of the many changes in the list and am particularly suspicious of the several restaurants on the list that opened in 2019-2020. That’s just not long enough to make the Top 50 cut.

    I have not eaten at any of the new top 50 and only 2 of the “honorable mention” restaurants (Kreuz and City Market). I find it hard to believe that Black’s in Lockhart is not among the top 100 places in Texas, but maybe it’s changed ownership or something.

    1. I’m skeptical as well, and a bit sad. I suspect that artistry may be getting replaced by machinery — technology. In Arizona and New Mexico, the hand-made pottery is infinitely more valuable than the machine-made although — or, actually, because — it has minor flaws.
