SoPo Seafood Market and Raw Bar, South Portland, Maine

We have just entered February, and many of you are thinking of Florida or the Islands. I am thinking of Florida. And St. Kitts and Nevis.

How many of you are thinking longingly of Maine? Come on, show of hands. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Well, for a flash there, I did think of Maine, specifically SoPo Market and Raw Bar in South Portland, the home of this alluring beauty —

Sigh! That, my friends, is an oyster with gin, creme fraiche, and hackleback roe. Senior South Portland Correspondents, Jon and Nancy Breul sent me that photo, and it turned an old man’s fancy. Nancy Breul: “This may be the best single bite f food I’ve ever had.”

That didn’t last. I’m back to thinking about the sunsets in Marco Island and the Islands. I haven’t forgotten SoPo, though, and there I will wander when next I turn Maineward. That will be in the summer, and I will meet old friends like the Breuls and Scratch Bakery and the Saltwater Grill and North43Bistro and a whole lot of other places across Maine.

If you’re in Maine, and I certainly don’t want to put any pressure on Ken and Johnette Christian or Knapp or Ella Davies Hudson, you probably ought to go to SoPo.
