Loveless Cafe and Motel, Nashville, Tennessee

I occasionally take barbecue-eating trips, but even on those trips it isn’t all about barbecue. I also eat country ham biscuits. See, e.g., here. When we went to eat barbecue in Nashville (“the other Nashville,” as they say in Eastern North Carolina), for our very first meal we headed straight to the Loveless Cafe down in the southwestern extremity of Davidson County. They say the … Continue reading Loveless Cafe and Motel, Nashville, Tennessee

The Barbecue Exchange, Gordonsville, Virginia

My last stop on this barbecue-eating trip took me to Gordonsville, Virginia, just a couple of hours from Washington. Rather than keep you in suspense, I’ll tell you up front that I was very pleased with the Barbecue Exchange. It’s well worth a visit. Before I get into that, Gordonsville is a lovely little town. The main street is only a few blocks long, but … Continue reading The Barbecue Exchange, Gordonsville, Virginia

Beale’s Brewery, Bedford, Virginia

After my lunch at Ace Biscuit and Barbecue, I headed south for a second lunch or early dinner at Beale’s Brewery in Bedford, Virginia. I’d been to Bedford once before with Nancy to see the National D-Day Memorial there. Bedford lost more local citizens per capita on D-Day than any other town or city in the United States. It’s an evocative memorial. Water spurts up … Continue reading Beale’s Brewery, Bedford, Virginia

Ace Biscuit and Barbecue, Charlottesville, Virginia

I got ahead of myself with that post on Edley’s in Nashville. I had mentioned earlier, in my post on The Avenue, that I was then just back from an eating trip to Virginia, to the detriment of my waistline. Let’s get back to that and restore some order to this Blog, beginning with a great place for both wood-cooked barbecue and breakfast. For my … Continue reading Ace Biscuit and Barbecue, Charlottesville, Virginia

Edley’s Bar-B-Que, Nashville, Tennessee

Nancy and I spent a long weekend in Nashville, and had a great time. The two immediate lures were (1) the Barbecue Bros ranking of the top five barbecue places in Nashville, and (2) really cheap airfares on Southwest. The Barbecue Bros are three friends from High Point, North Carolina who, as every good North Carolinian, like to eat barbecue. The Bros, Speedy, Monk, and … Continue reading Edley’s Bar-B-Que, Nashville, Tennessee

The Avenue, Washington, DC

The Avenue is a neighborhood place up Connecticut Avenue from us, on the same short commercial strip as Blue 44. In normal times, it’s on three levels. There’s the main floor, with a bar and tables, and upper and lower levels for overflow and various events, from alumni gatherings and preschool parent groups to charity fundraisers to sessions for young teenagers on sexual harassment issues. … Continue reading The Avenue, Washington, DC

The Easterly, Red Hook, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

On our last night in St. Thomas, Michael, Liza, and I had an outstanding dinner at The Easterly. As I look back, it was the best restaurant dinner of our trip. I know, I know. But really, Nancy insisted on staying home to babysit Ella and Lily, and wouldn’t hear of me staying home with her. It wouldn’t be the sort of thing I would … Continue reading The Easterly, Red Hook, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Bleuwater, Great Bay, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands

After our sunset cruise, we (Tanners, Boyds, and Hammons) dropped the kids with a babysitter and went to dinner at Bleuwater, one of the in-house restaurants at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. Regular readers will know that I’m not a fine dining guy. When I’m not eating barbecue, I gravitate toward places like the Blue and White, Lindsey’s Chevron, and my favorite breakfast place. But every … Continue reading Bleuwater, Great Bay, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands
