Cloud 9 Skybar and Lounge, Hilton Prague, Czech Republic

The Hilton Prague, which is where Viking put us up for our three-night  pre-cruise stay in Prague, has a rooftop bar and lounge — the Cloud 9 Skybox.  Whenever you’re staying in a hotel with a rooftop lounge, you should go up and have a drink, maybe two.  I heard that some of our fellow travelers may have had more than two, but that happens.

Nancy and I went up there to enjoy the view.  The Hilton sits riverside and the view is worth a photo, if you actually remember to take one. Instead, we sat and I ordered a Staropramen while Nancy ordered a snack, the Frozen Passion. The menu describes it as “mandarin and passion fruit tapioca with pine nuts and micro herbs.”   That sounds tame enough, and it looked unremarkable, a bowl sitting on a platter.

They set it on the table and poured some water into the platters and …

Nancy was very impressed as were other diners.

When the dry ice and water had done their work and things had settled, the dish was very pretty.

Beautiful, actually.  It tasted very good, too.  This is just the sort of thing you should order when you’re on vacation.

The Cloud 9 Skybar offers many other snacks, including various sliders and “suckling pig and octopus tacos,” which I would have ordered just to see if there was one of each or if the pork and octopus were one in the same taco, but I still wasn’t hungry after that extraordinary lunch at La Republica.

As I said, you always should visit rooftop bars, and at the Hilton Prague, you’ll be able to see a sight even without looking out the window.

  1. We are thinking about doing a river cruise in Europe and Prague is a city I’ve always wanted to see. Would you mind sharing some about your cruise, what cities, what river, time of year you traveled, recommendations, etc. You can responded to my email if you don’t want to publish it on your blog.

  2. Joe, This is our second Viking river cruise. I did a long post on the first — https://johntannersbbqblog.wordpress.com/2019/07/15/the-food-on-viking-river-cruises/ and posts on restaurants in Lyon, Arles and Avignon — and Paris, of course. That time we visited Paris for 5 night on our own and then took the train to Lyon and boarded the ship after a night in Lyon.
This time we did the Romantic Danube cruise from Regensburg to Budapest with stops in Passau, Krems, Vienna, and Budapest. This time, though we booked a 3 night pre-cruise stay in Prague through Viking and a 2 night post-cruise stay in Budapest. I’ll be posting as we go along. Very briefly, Viking takes good care of you. They’ll make flight arrangement, met you at the airport and repeatedly make sure everyone has all their luggage, transport you to the ship or to the pre cruise hotel. They provide a complimentary overview tour in every port city, and you can pay for extra tours -with special focus. For example we did a special trip to see a concert in Vienna. Usually we did the overview tour and then walked around the city on our own. There’s a lot to see.
The cabins are, of course, small, but large enough the storage room is genius level. You don’t spend a lot of time in your cabin. The food is good and plentiful — not as strongly seasoned as I like, but then I like very strongly seasoned food. I’ll do a more detailed post on the cruise as a whole in the next come of week couple of weeks that will touch on logistics and on-board food.
Dress is casual but very rarely sloppy, there’s open seating at meals, and you end up meeting a lot of interesting people. Everything is relaxed and fun, especially if you’re able to meet deadlines: if they say they’ll sail at 5:00 pm, they’ll sail at 5:00 pm
There’s a lot of information about each cruise on the Viking website. We’ve decided to take another cruise, and will one day decide when and where.
Feel free to ask any specific questions

    John

    1. Good info, thanks. And, we are simpatico with the food seasoning. Next year is our 50th wedding anniversary and she wants to go to Paris and take a river cruise. What you did sounds a lot like what we were thinking. Thanks again. Oh, are you a Fellow Tar Heel? A couple of things you’ve said make me think that you are or maybe a Dookie.

      1. I’m a Tarheel born but grew up all over, mostly in Alabama. I have and desire no association with the Evil One. I do get down to NC when I can for family and barbecue and cat head biscuits
