Angelle’s Diner, Salem, Virginia

No sooner were Nancy and I back from our state capital walks in Oklahoma and Arkansas than we headed down to Tuscaloosa for our annual visit to Bob and Babs McCurley. We drive down and I teach one of Bob’s Honors College classes (redistricting), and we get tickets to an Alabama football game. Then Sunday we hustle over to Birmingham to see family, but in … Continue reading Angelle’s Diner, Salem, Virginia

Smokin’ Joe’s Rib House, Bentonville, Arkansas

The morning after we’d completed out state capital walk, Nancy and I left Little Rock for Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. Crystal Bridges was established by Alice Walton, and opened on 11-11-11. Take a look at the aerial photo on the website. It’s stunning The museum is a series of pods over water with a grand array of paintings by Gilbert Stuart, … Continue reading Smokin’ Joe’s Rib House, Bentonville, Arkansas

Stoney’s Seafood House at Clarke’s Landing, Hollywood, St. Mary’s County, Maryland

I’ve reported on Stoney’s at Clarke’s Landing before, but I’ve been meaning to get back. It has a wonderful location at 25480 Clarke’s Landing Lane at a point of land on Cuckold Creek. (This is a family blog so we”ll say no more.) Anyway, it’s just off the Patuxent, and you can sit outside and look down over the water to the long arch of … Continue reading Stoney’s Seafood House at Clarke’s Landing, Hollywood, St. Mary’s County, Maryland

Loblolly Creamery, Little Rock, Arkansas

While Nancy and I were eating my pork sandwich from Pop Pop and Yum Yam, Nancy, who has a Lyncean ability to spot ice cream venues, noted that many people who walked by us were carrying ice cream cones. I, of course, was pork-focused and otherwise oblivious. We back-tracked the trail of cones, and found ourselves outside Loblolly. I recalled that LaLa, aka Laura, of … Continue reading Loblolly Creamery, Little Rock, Arkansas

La Piquette, Cathedral Heights, Washington, DC

Nancy gave me a special lunch as one of my birthday gifts this year. I’d already had what I consider birthday dinners at Sadie’s in Albuquerque and Cattlemen’s Cafe in Oklahoma City, so this was a real treat. I settled on La Piquette, the French Cafe at 3714 Macomb Street, across from 2 Amys. It was a rainy day and the place was crowded when … Continue reading La Piquette, Cathedral Heights, Washington, DC

Pop Pop & Yum Yam Food Truck, Little Rock, Arkansas

Nancy and I started the morning with the hotel breakfast and drove to the Little Rock Visitors Center to start our 48th 10K state capital walk. There we found out that it would be a 12K walk. Nothing daunted, we strolled downtown through a lively district and over to the Clinton Presidential Library. We’d visited it before on our way back from my distinguished visiting … Continue reading Pop Pop & Yum Yam Food Truck, Little Rock, Arkansas

Kebab House, Little Rock, Arkansas

After a grand and very well fed stay in Oklahoma City where we completed our 47th state capital 10k walk, Nancy and I rolled into our hotel in the far reaches of Little Rock. It had been a long, delightful, and not only fulfilling, but filling day, with a delicious lunch with friends at Smokies in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. We unpacked, and by this time … Continue reading Kebab House, Little Rock, Arkansas

Breaking News: New Location for Linda’s Cafe, Lexington Park, St. Marys County, Maryland

I’ve reviewed Linda’s Cafe twice, here and here, with both reports clouded by impending doom. Royal Farms, it seems, purchased the site, and plans to tear down this local landmark and mar Lexington Park with another cookie cutter corporate property. Linda’s has continued to operate under a shadow and offer wonderful food — including the world’s best toast, I mean the best — as well … Continue reading Breaking News: New Location for Linda’s Cafe, Lexington Park, St. Marys County, Maryland
