Lunch at Le Chat Noir, Tenleytown, Washington, DC

I polled the Old Guy’s Lunch Symposium members about where to go for our monthly lunch. Crickets. Then Bob Berendt took leadership and suggested Le Chat Noir. An excellent choice. I reviewed a lunch at Le Chat Noir once before (and dinner once). In the course of a positive lunch review I noted in passing that I’d once had a bad meal there 30 or … Continue reading Lunch at Le Chat Noir, Tenleytown, Washington, DC

Atomic Seafood and Bar, Lusby, Calvert County, Maryland

There are times when there’s just not enough time or energy to cook a meal, and all you want to do is stay home with family. Our answer, like yours, is usually carryout, and we’ve been ordering meals from Atomic Seafood for four years now. Atomic recently changed owners, right before I was going to go back to do a post about their Italian sub. … Continue reading Atomic Seafood and Bar, Lusby, Calvert County, Maryland

A Magnificent Father’s Day Breakfast

I was sitting on the couch counting my blessings when Ella arrived bearing a sausage egg and cheese croissant from the Dunkin’ Donuts in Lusby a cup of coffee, and some hugs. Here’s Ella. Here’s the coffee — Dunkin’s dependable coffee.. The croissant and an inside look. The croissant held up pretty well on the drive from Dunkin’, and the sausage wasn’t bad (short of … Continue reading A Magnificent Father’s Day Breakfast

Nick’s Diner, Wheaton, Montgomery County, Maryland

A couple or three blocks from the great and wonderful Full Key is another gem, Nick’s Diner. Regular readers are familiar with my love for breakfast at old, simple diners, the ones that offer coffee, bacon and eggs, potatoes, and toast — just the breakfast standards. These are intensely local places, and usually are Third Spaces where people meet and gather during the hours away … Continue reading Nick’s Diner, Wheaton, Montgomery County, Maryland

The Cincinnati Roadfood Crawl Ends (for me) with Laszlo’s Iron Skillet, Withamsville, Ohio

My final Roadfood Crawl meal was at Laszlo’s Iron Skillet. I would like to have stayed for Holman’s Donuts and French Toast Heaven (more goetta!) on Sunday morning — or drive to western Kentucky for a few days to try some mutton barbecue and fried catfish, but I was eager to get back to my grandfatherly duties on Sunday. Ella’s chorus, the Children’s Chorus of … Continue reading The Cincinnati Roadfood Crawl Ends (for me) with Laszlo’s Iron Skillet, Withamsville, Ohio

Full Key, Wheaton, Montgomery County, Maryland

Full Key is one of the many small ethnic restaurants in Wheaton. It sits in a small strip mall at 2227 University Boulevard with other restaurants and shops. Here’s the menu, and here’s an out of focus photo of the sign. Full Key is a common Cantonese restaurant name, and translates into “prosperous” or the like. Full Key is not related to Full Kee, the … Continue reading Full Key, Wheaton, Montgomery County, Maryland

The Cincinnati Roadfood Crawl, Day 3: Stops at NBLchckn at Jungle Jim’s, Ribs! at Home Place, Roney’s, and Blue Ash Chili

The Roadfood Crawl started Day 3 well indeed at Everything Bagels. Then it was a short drive or longish walk to our next stop. Jungle Jim’s is a hoot! You must go there if you get near Cincinnati. It’s a gargantuan international grocery store, and not only should you not miss it, you can’t. It stands out … architecturally. Inside Jungle Jim’s you’ll find section … Continue reading The Cincinnati Roadfood Crawl, Day 3: Stops at NBLchckn at Jungle Jim’s, Ribs! at Home Place, Roney’s, and Blue Ash Chili

Chesapeake Market and Deli, North Beach, Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Another day, another crab cake! We all headed north from Lusby for a latish lunch at the Chesapeake Market and Deli. We’d enjoyed lunch there before, despite my foolish choice, as you can read here. They’re located at 7150 Lake Shore Drive, North Beach, or, more specifically Rose Haven, an unincorporated area just over the Anne Arundel County line. Rose Haven boasts the Herrington Harbor … Continue reading Chesapeake Market and Deli, North Beach, Anne Arundel County, Maryland

After the Findlay Market — A Cincinnati Variety Pack: Lake Nina, Mr. Gene’s Dog House, Mesopotamia, and Izzie’s

One thing about a Roadfood Crawl is that you end up trying all sorts of foods, including very local specialties like Goetta, Mettwurst, and, as we’re about to see, Mock Turtle Soup. After the wonderful food at Eckerlin Meats and Alabama Fish Bar, the afternoon of Day 2 of the Cincinnati Roadfood Crawl began with a wonderful Old School fish place. I loved the Lake … Continue reading After the Findlay Market — A Cincinnati Variety Pack: Lake Nina, Mr. Gene’s Dog House, Mesopotamia, and Izzie’s

Hidden Harbour, Solomon’s, Calvert County, Maryland

I mentioned that on our last visit to Barrel 9, Nancy and I fell into conversation with the group at the next table and, as conversations in which I’m engaged often do, turned to restaurants. Hidden Harbour came up quickly, right after Buckets. There was talk about their crab cakes and, of course the Harbour Hot Dog, on which I reported here. A trip to … Continue reading Hidden Harbour, Solomon’s, Calvert County, Maryland
